Spell - Bind Familiar

I'm a big fan of the concept of a familiar, and as such I'm always left a little wanting when reading the various versions of the concept found in the many editions of D&D. Naturally I therefore decided to make my own version version of the classic Find Familiar spell, presented in the style of OSE.

Bind Familiar

Level: Magic-User 1
Duration: Permanent
Range: 30'

The caster merges their spirit with a that of small creature, forming an unbreakable bond.
  • Loyalty: Familiars are utterly loyal to the caster and will always come to their defense.
  • Empathy: Both the caster and the familiar can always sense what the other is feeling.
  • Commands: The caster may give the familiar commands, which it will obey, regardless of the risk
  • Hit Points: The caster gains a number of maximum hit points equal to the roll to determine the hit points of the familiar (not counting any modifiers).

Restrictions: Only a single animal or other similar creature (eg. a brownie, imp, pseudodragon, quasit, etc) of ½ HD or less may be affected by this spell. The caster may only successfully cast this spell once.

Statistics: Familiars use the same statistics as other individuals of their type with the following additions;
  • Hit Dice: Creatures of less than ½ HD instead have ½ HD.
  • Hit Points: The familiar gains an additional +2 hit points and another +1 hit point for every level of the caster above 1st level, with a maximum of +10 hit points at 9th level.
  • Saving Throws: Familiars use the same saving throw values as the caster.

Death: Should the familiar or caster die the other must make an immediate save versus death. If the familiar is dead the caster no longer gains any additional hit points. The caster may resurrect their familiar in a ritual costing 1000gp.
